Lets start carping!(part one) - TheTackle Shop

Carpking writes: I am going to try and get us set up with a £200 budget in mind, but that is only a broadline. Obviously if you shop around items can be bought cheaper. Although I am a firm believer that quality is the key in angling.

Firstly lets look at rod(s) I strongly suggest that we choose a progressive action right through to the butt, this way we can cast our leads further, and have the beauty of short to medium to long range fishing. I recommend a test curve (tc) of two and a quarter to two and half, no more at this stage, The Diawa range are superb rods and expect to purchase one around £50

Next we move onto reels, short and sweet this one. Shimano baitrunner 6000 or 6010 priced around £45 We need the baitrunner facility as I will explain later in the article.

Line, Ok this is a personal choice but as a newcomer forget braid for now, instead opting for monofilament at no less than 15 breaking strain (bs) for the main line. Berkley big game, pro gold,gardnerGR60 are a few that spring to mind.

Leads, opt for the Korda styles that hang on the side pendulem fashion, a few 2oz will do for now. Leave the in liners alone.

Hooklinks, Kryston flourocarbons are the best option for now These come in 25 mtr. spools, I personally use ghost flouro as it is less visible than most , but that is just a personal thing.

Hooks, again this is down to the individual but size six T Rapter is very good at this stage, A pkt. of nash safety clips & rubbers

Bite detection, Well we need an alarm, so I am going to recommend Fox ultron or similar, around £30 but shop around
No need for pods just now a couple of bank sticks will be fine assuming your peg allows you to get them in

That is just about it for now, we have the rod, reel, line, end tackle, and bite indication, and if we have shopped well we still have a bit of change left hopefully.

In the next part we will put it together and set up on the bank.
