daveb writes: A TEAM of anglers from Sparsholt College hope to reel in some charity cash when they participate in the World Carp Classic in association with Rod Hutchinson in October. Steve Allen, 36, and Rob Clarke, 33, have been granted free entry to the prestigious event after guaranteeing to donate any winnings and sponsorship funds to the British Disabled Angling Association and the English Carp Heritage Association. World Event Management Ltd, the company organising the World Carp Classic in association with Rod Hutchinson – which takes place at Lac Amance, Foret d’Orient, in the Champagne region of France from October 27-31 – was only too pleased to help out when it discovered the duo were looking to raise funds for the deserving causes. Event director Chris New said: “When we discovered Steve and Rob were looking to raise funds while participating we felt it would be supportive gesture from us if we were to waive the £590 entry fee. “This ensures much less of their hard-earned sponsorship money will be lost on expenses – and more will go to their chosen charitable causes.” Steve, who like Rob is a mature BSc aquaculture and fishery management student, was equally delighted event organisers were sympathetic to his cause. He said: “We have been overwhelmed with the level of support received from individuals and organisations alike. Being mature students and family men, funds have been tight but the fantastic offer of free entrance to the World Carp Classic in association with Rod Hutchinson means a lot more money going to two great causes: the British Disabled Angling Association and the English Carp Heritage Organisation. “Our many, many thanks go out to the people behind the World Carp Classic.” Once again the prize table at the World Carp Classic in association with Rod Hutchinson comprises £25,000 with a massive £10,000 first prize – and should Steve and Rob win the prize money, £5,000 will go to each of their chosen organisations. By the end of 2004, the World Carp Classic in association with Rod Hutchinson will have given away £150,000 worth of prizes with a total of over £50,000 in cash. Since the World Carp Classic in association with Rod Hutchinson arrived at Lac Amance in September 2000, over a ton of carp has been caught and with this year’s competition taking place in October the 2004 event promises to carry on the tradition. A team from Sparsholt College, Hampshire, will be preparing the lake in advance of the competition. They will be onsite throughout the event to provide the best possible marshalling. With such a wide expanse of fishable banks around the lake, the World Carp Classic in association with Rod Hutchinson is sure to create a big splash this autumn.
