Hey I am new to carp fishing and was wondering how I could make some fairly cheap, simple but effective boilies…

I headed down to Eastney to to see if any plaice might be about as conditions looked perfect. I arrived at the end of low water and only one other was fishing. I used wishbones with plenty of bling in breakaway devices allowing me to head hook the ragworm so they’d wriggle in the clear water.

Plaice were the target but anything would do and I was delighted to find I’d saved my blank and kicked 2011 off first cast. A short spined sea scorpion:

Others turned up and the beach soon filled up with fisherman, dog-walkers etc. Things were very quiet right through the flood, chatting to other anglers it seemed my scorpion was the only fish caught. Right at the top of the tide I felt something kick on the retrieve then saw white in the surf. Brought it in on a wave and a flatty was on the beach, the white underside facing up. Could it be the elusive plaice?

I flipped him over……..flounder! I wasn’t too disappointed as it was still nice to catch on a day session in February.

Four short sorties this week catching something each time.

Mon – Short Arm – about a dozen fish evenly split between whiting to 10 oz & LSDs to 1.5 lb. Bait Mackeral.

Tue – Short Arm – a small whiting first chuck, then nothing till dropping a doggie at the end of the session. Bait Mackeral.

Wed – Short Arm – a whiting early on with a Rockling & small LSD in the middle, think there was another whiting at the end. Bait Ragworm. It was persistently raining & my floaty now leaks on the arms…. bother.

Thu – Beach – A flounder (only fish) from the nice surf that was running. Bait Ragworm.

Hopefully we will get conditions like this when the bass come back.

A good week all in all, as last year I couldn’t catch a cold this time of year.

Used the bait I had leftover from Tuesday to have a couple of hours at Erith Pier,
Picked up a pack of raw Prawns from the supermarket to make the worms last a bit longer, started at the bottom of the tide and it was DEAD not even a Crab in the first 2 hours then I had a bite and reeled in to soon so rebaited and cast out again into the smae spot and it was still there so I sat on my hands for 5 minutes and then reeled in this fish2

Nothing else was being caught so we packed up about 3.00 and when I reeled in both of my hook snoods had been bitten through , probably the Mitten crabs have made it back into the river from their breeding trip into fresh water.
