maggot care

Maggots are one of the maistay baits of Course fishing and can be used for sea fishing too in harbours and brackish water
They keep wel if when purchased are fresh with large food sacs
Stored in a fridge in plenty of Bran to keep them dry they will keep almost 2 weeks

they need to be transferd to maize meal cheap FROM a lot of delicatessens especiall those who do West Indian foods

The only problem is as they get to the end of their useful life they get tough skins so very shark hooks are needed

Re: maggot care

Maggots will die if too cold, I have left them in the fridge before at a low temeperature setting. Although last time I went out on my match a few anglers where fishing with dead maggots which im told can work on some venues.

Re: maggot care

On some waters dead maggots are 10 times better than live ones, one reason is the one stated above, but also as they look different and are what the fish might usualy find on the lake bed as they fall from the trees.

(i found they fell from the trees one evenin while carping and having a snooze under me bivvy, there were numerouse splatting sounds on me bivvy, sounded like small rain drops, but went out side to see what it wa and al these lil tiny yellowy maggots werecralling all over it, throught the air vents of me easy dome and into the pockets, took me 2 weeks to clear them all out and even now im still finding the odd one!)

what is this ?????

Ah................ the old damp maggot problem when maggot wriggle they get warm so they sweat the hotter they get the more they sweat

when you buy maggots the shop will put a little bit of maize powder on them to help keep them dry

SO they never put enough on
So you can either go to the supermarket and get some ground maize (usually in the deli aisle) or use some really fine plain white breadcrumb

All you need is a small handful so that the maggots sweat is absorbed
and they keep dry
and dry maggots then don't wriggle as much so don't sweat as much
so chill down better

AND chilled maggots last longer but keep them too longand the skins become tough and they are not so good for hookbait but fine for feeding in (better if you freeze them as dead maggots don't bury themselves in the bottom)

Maggot care

If you are going to keep maggots in a fridge the temp needs to be 34 Fahrenheit
If you do take them colder they will go into diapause the state they archive to overwinter in the wild if this happens just riddle of the medium that you have them in has gently has you can replace with sawdust and leave at room temp till they come around anything up to six hours

your losses will be minimal

do not squeeze and play with them this will kill them

average time from maggot to fly 18 to 21 days

watch out for fish fed maggots they are the ones that froth up
