Question cod or this?

i was watching gmtv this morning and they were talking about the shortage of cod so i have deceided to do a thread about choosing other sea fish that are a different option other than cod
(i have reaserched all of this)

The red gurnard
The red gurnard is a bottom feeder which 'walks' on six spiny legs and when caught makes a croaking noise similar to a frog. Verdict: Totally gross, but tastes delicious and is in plentiful supply. Ideal for stews.

The flounder
The flounder(or fluke) is another bottom dweller. It's got eyes on one side of its head and mostly eats fish spawn. Verdict: Ugly-looking, but has a sweet and delicate nut-like taste. Choose flounders from Cornwall, Wales or North West if possible.

The common dolphin-fish
this fish has no relation to the dolphin(google it) its in the name and it looks totally different

The common dolphin-fish (no relation) is another odd-looking fish but this time it's got a bulging forehead. Verdict: it tastes a bit like chicken and is fine to fish if it is line-caught

so could the overfishnig of cod be causing them to drop massivly i population!

so next time you go to the chip shop vary your fish

but would you eat this?

Jellyfish and chips?

As a result humans will have to start eating lower and lower down the seafood chain, and face the alarming prospect of eating as yet unheard-of dishes such as compressed plankton burgers and deep fried jellyfish with chips.

One of the solutions, say the MCS, is to encourage people to eat more environmentally-sustainable, and lesser-known fish, such as coley, pollack or gurnard.

In fact, sales of gurnard have rocketed from £17,000 to £181,000 in the past year. The odd-looking fish has been quietly winning over the country's top chefs and now consumers are beginning to take note. What was once used as lobster bait is now being served up as an expensive main course in the nation's poshest restaurants.

Check out a selection of the kind of fish that could soon be gracing your menu in our strange fish gallery above.

Danger to all sea life

The MCS's head of conservation Dr Simon Brockington said the threats posed by litter, over-fishing and a lack of habitat protection were "very real", while the impacts of climate change would worsen the situation in the coming years.

He said continuing damage to the marine ecosystem could push it into a state where it only supported life lower down the food chain such as jellyfish and plankton, making it less productive.

"Too many fish are taken from the sea, too much rubbish is thrown into the sea and too little is done to protect precious marine life and habitats. We have to act now," he urged.

And he said: "In the next few years we're going to start seeing the effects of climate change; the first effects are already there, such as migration of fish and plankton types. Unless we build a healthy ecosystem, the impacts of climate change will be far worse."

Hi, Will.
Dolphin-fish is a fish that lives in the warmer waters so it's very rae we'd find one around the UK areas but other chip shops may use them.
I wouldn't bother about jellyfish and chips!
Red-gurnard are also getting more used bu chip shops - but the most comment replacments are pollack, mackerel and flatfish.
Of course - most still sell cod but it is getting more and more expensive.
And - they still sell things like bass and possibly whiteing.

Around where we live Haddock is the fish most folk prefer and so as usual in Rip off Britain hte price has shot up higher than Cod which is rarer
Also we have been eating Coley (Coalfish) for years especially after a sea fishing trip

For the more exotic fish you tend to have to go to restaurants around here as most folk go for

Fish and Chips and get what they are given
Kebab
Curry
Chips and Cheese

There's one in Bakewell Derbyshire -- you don't want to know the price
I certainly won't pay that much for a fried fish

Raninbow can be expensive. I've also not been to keane on haddock - but dow here in Cornwall - pollack is the top contender replacing cod in most chip shops.

Brown trout taste better
but Grayling taste better than any trout
poached in white wine and Fennel fronds
or even just poached in milk then strain the milk and add parsley and cornflour for a sauce

All fish ussaly last a couple of days maximum if you keep them in the freezer. But the longer they're in there - the lest tastier they'll be.
