Post How To Remove A Hook From Your Hand...

Hi guys. I have decided to post this thread - as if you get a hook wound - you'll need to know what to do!

INTRODUCTION:
In the course of fishing, sooner or later, you'll get a hook penetrate a finger, hand or arm past the barb. Shore anglers are likely to be not too far away from professional medical help. But what if you're in the wilds of Scotland, Ireland or Wales and miles away from the nearest doctor or hospital? Even worse, what if you're 40 miles offshore aboard a boat? Here's what to do!

WHEN PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL HELP IS CLOSE BY:
Support the casualties hand and cut the fishing line close to the hook.
Build up pads of gauze over and around the wound to fully protect it, now bandage over it lightly with minimal pressure to avoid working the hook in deeper. Seek medical attention immediately.

WHEN MEDICAL HELP IS UNAVAILABLE AND THE BARB HAS FULLY ENTERED:
Loop a piece of fishing line around the curve of the hook. Pressure the eye of the hook down on to the finger to give the barb a more vertical angle. If the eye of the hook extends beyond the finger, pad under the hook shank to get more leverage when pressure is applied to the eye. Pull sharply on the line around the hook to withdraw the barb and point. Fully clean and dress the wound with antiseptic cream. It's a MUST checking that your Tetanus immunity is up-to-date as soon as possible.
It is also advisable to cut the shaft of the hook so you don't pull the eye through the wound as well.

IF THE BARB IS VISIBLE AND HAS EXITED THE WOUND:
Cut the hook point off below the barb while supporting the casualties hand. Withdraw the hook by gently pulling it backwards from the wound.
Clean and dress the wound using antiseptic cream. You MUST ensure that you tetanus immunity is up-to-date. If the barb has exited it is sometimes better to removethe eye and pull the hook out in the same direction especially with the specialist worming hooks that have barbs along their length.

A certain antiseptic cleansing liquid that's used would be good but it has recently been dropped by NICE so it's beeing checked for it's validity of use.

I hope this helps as one day, mabey, hopefully not but mabey - you might need it - so always carry a fisrt aid kit on hand!
Tight Lines!

And it's not just people's hands: legs, arms, eyes, tounge, ears, toes, fingers and chests have been reported to be caught with hooks, too!
