I'd say from my experience with shingle beaches before, during the day, 20lb - 30lb main line and a 10lb - 20lb trace. I find the most effective way is to use a dexter wedge in those kind of places, but if you prefer to use bait, lugworm is good in those areas.

Beach fishing
I would suggest using a tripod to hold your beachcaster, line 15-18lb main, using either a 2 hook flapper for close in work or a Pulley clip down for the bigger fish. For distance you could use Clip down rig or one of the new D-vice leads which I find very useful.
