Your best bet this time of the year is to deadbait, fish a spot for about 45-55 mins and then move, cause if a feeding pike is in this area your bait will be picked up within this time scale..all you need is two treble hooks on a 12" long trace (you can buy them made up) then four big shot, biggest ones you can get, pinch them on to the wire near the swivel end then 12-15lb mainline...job done, no floats no other resistance and just watch the line travel light, or you can put it on an alarm with a drop back indicator, make sure you hook your deadbait on with the hook nearest the rod tip in the root of the tail and the other hook mid body..you shouldn't deep hook then...make sure you have your forceps !! good luck

don't you hook the dead bait with the head nearest the rod tip and the tale at the end treble cause the pike strike from behind or not? if you put the head on the bottom hook wont the line get in the way of the fish striking at the tail or not? i'm a beginer so i dont really no.. and also ive never dead baited is there any need of a ledger then if i put those 4 big weights? and also whats the best deadbait to use and how do i get it???

Tom, you have to hook the deadbait in the root of the tail with the treble hook nearest the rod tip, then the other treble needs to be no more than half way down the deadbait, "Do Not Hook In The Head End" !! as Pike pick up the bait and swallow head first, you will deep hook the fish and this will proberbly kill it.. as Pike are a very fragile fish regardless of its very sharp teeth !!..........hit any runs quite quickly about 4-5 secs from pick up and if the pike are only smallish in the water use smaller baits....Smelt, sardines but these are not too good for casting at range as very soft..
As for time i said before 45-55 mins then move to another area, all you need to do is put big split shot sssg on the treble hook trace next to the swivel about 3-4 and flick it out you can put it on a rodrest with a dropback indicator or put you baitrunner as loose as it will go.....the weight, size of the bait and the split shot is enough resistance for a Pike to move off with your bait, if it feels a tight line or too much weight on the trace, it will spit the bait and drop the take..
But you need some weight... no weight at all and the Pike maynot move or register a bite, thus deephooking again !!
Never just leave a deadbait out and walk off either as it can pick up any time...be ready with unhooking mat, long forceps, wire cutters and always play the fish out in the water mate better unhooking onthe bank then....if you want put a float on the line will help you spot any takers easier so from the trebles and trace you have your swivel then a soft bead float not too big !! as this is extra resisance a hard bed and a power gum stop knot fished about 2-3" over depth.....hope this helps and good luck on your trip..keep us posted
