I believe if you must use bait, we should use circle hooks. Properly used they can hook the corner of the fish's mouth so they are releasable.

Never seen a circle hook since 1980 on the Broads who still makes them

used inturned hooks though

barbed straight hooks always. they are the best for the fishes welfare. barbless and inturned hooks are much more damageing to a fishs mouth.
