Fly fishing for pike
I am interested in having a go at fly fishing for pike.
I have a 9 - 10 weight spey rod which should take the oversized flies But have never done it. I can make the flies but I want to know what size is the most effective. The other question is what about the leader? I am assuming the modern wire trace would be ideal. However what length are we talking about? Would you just have the leader with attached to the fly line with a link swivel at the hook end? Or would you go the other way and have a 25lb leader of possibly 8 feet with an 18 inch leader? This thought concerns me as there would be too many joints and links which may detract from the presentation. The other question would be at what depth are we finding to be the most productive? |

Guys, I have had no tips on the flyfishing for pike aspect.
Is that because nobody has tried it? Or is it because it is so basic that you think I am having a laugh? I do have my own theorys but I want other opinions before I put them into practice. Please get back to me on this. When I do have a go at this I will let you know how I get on |

Why wait
Why are you going to wait for the winter?
I started pike fishing this season. I go out at least 2 times a week. I have had 1 blank day. Lure and plug fishing is very exciting. While deadbaiting is a patient waiting game. I tend to rig up a dead bait on the alarm and use the spinning rod a little further up the swim. The dead bait has always been taken at dusk just as a small float is becoming hard to see at a distance. For me the logic is, go fishing in comfort without freezing your fingers off. If you want any tips I will happily pass them on, but I am sure there are people out there with more experience than me. |

Sorry for the delay in getting bak to you.
I was busy pike fishing on the Cherwell at a place called iffley lock Very interesting and enjoyable. 1 guy was fishing with the smallest rubber shad I have ever seen. It is one and quarter inches long. He reckons it is a killer. He told me that he got it from Poland. Then the guy popped over to my swim and gave me a spare one that he had in his kit. I intend to try it later on this evening. But as with everything the trick is how to fish it. Anyway the point I was going to make was, where I fish there are pike, perch "carp" chub as well as the normal silvers. I now go to these swims and decide what to fish for when I get there. If the carp are rolling then I will rig up for them. I have only fished once on a carp lake (fly fishing with a bread flake imitation), So I can not say what it is like, but to me, the idea of putting out three rods, 1 dead bait, 1 spinning and 1 for float or feeder is so exciting and possibly 1 rod too many. |

Canals
I've tried flies for jack pike in a canal with great success. It was fantastic fun too just walking up and down the banks with a rod, mat, and net.
Good luck Justin Solutions4Finance, Cars & Commercials |

Only just seen this thread
Not done the fly fishing bit ---yet only used dead baits and lures but have seen some folk fishing it trouble is where I fish for Pike Fly is banned because of people walking their dogs on the footpaths 10m behind the pegs and they tend not to stick to the paths so as it's council owned not allowed

Hello all, i've been a pike angler for about 20 years in Norfolk and been flyfishing for them about 3 years. Its a very productive way of getting hits in the summer, can be i little tricky on the casting sometimes as the lure/fly can be heavy, but its just a thing you get to grips with time.
So many pike flys on the market for the pike fly angler, its one that is taking off, i have had pike hit flys as they hit the water, retrieving also spotting a pike and fly casting to it, is heart pounding as it turns to follow !! i love this style of fishing...also fly fish for carp with a small pellets...but at this point in time i am Norfolk broads beadbaiting.. ![]() |
