mackerel is one of the most popular pike baits, and is the best one to try on a new venue mackerel are readily avalible from good tackle shops fish mungers and some food stores. it is very oily bait and emmits a strong aroma it has tough skin therefore good for casting as it stays on the hook
it is particualy good bait on clear water venues like gravel pits been known to catch pike up to a whooping 30lbs! lampray; can be fish in whole or sections it is taken by all preditory species including chub. lamprey contains thick black blood which emit a attractive smell, pike can smell this up to a mile away! a forgotten bait is herring. herring of all the sea fish looks like roach roach is the most nataral dead bait they also are very oily and potent smelling which attaracts fish from distences they are sold in good tackle shops, and food shops like tescos they can be died many colours like red, orange and yellow. hope this helps, 3SIXTY |
