Fishing laws...please help!

If anyone can give advice on this it would be much appreciated.

I am very new to fishing and happen to have a large lake directly at the bottom of my mum and dads garden. The garden goes down right up to the waters edge and there is no public footpath between the lake and our garden.

I fished there on Saturday and pulled out my first ever carp (common) which weighed 20lb 2oz (had to get that bit in). The owner of the lake said that I had no right to fish there as I don't have fishing rights, but having spoken to a couple of people they believe that if I am fishing from our own land which backs directly onto the lake and no property is being damaged then he cannot stop me from fishing.

I have my rod license which i believed was all I needed.

Can anyone help with this??

Hey Darlo, welcome to the forum. Is the lake a day ticket water? If this guy has stocked the water himself I can see why he is a bit pissed off that someone is fishing it for free. Although from a legal point i'm not sure where you stand. Let me know how you get on.

No it is not a day ticket lake, the lake has very very rarely been fished, there are only 3 houses I believe which actually have rod licenses written in the deeds of their house. He has never stocked the lake, it is natural and been there for hundreds of years.

I just believe that the whole lake comes with the deeds of his house.

Normally if you have a waters edge within the bounds of your land then for the extent of that land you have riperian rights (you can fish ).

IF the deeds of Your plot don't show the waters edge as part of your property you don't

Sounds like time to check the deeds

NO BAD LANGUAGE PLEASE

IF the land owner has sold the rights then he hasn't got the privilege to fish

IF the house is LEASEHOLD then he hasn't got the privilege to fish

IF the house is rented then the rent book will tell you if you can fish
