were to catch baitfish in fall

hey i fish all year round and i always catch my own live bait but now that fall is here im having trouble finding baitfish.Shiners,minnows,and all kinds of little fish like thouse. ive tried puting one of thouse minow traps out. i hooked one to a milk jug and let it float around all night and found it in the morning on the other side of the lake empty. i tried hooking a line to a tree and taking it from shore out toe about 13' and dropin it to the bottom. and ive tried setting it in the river in a pile of weeds were i saw minnows around but there was now fish caught. the water temp is 50 degreas farhenite and theres usualy alot of wind with white caps on the water exept for morning.its a fesh water lake also. so could someone help try to teach me how to catch some bait. thanks

Where abouts in the world are you?

i live in MI and its a chain of 5 lakes there not huge but there not small lakes. thanks
