heavy-braked reel

hello everyone

I've come across the expression

HEAVY BRAKED REEL

and don't know if it refers to the braked hemp as mentioned by Izaak Walton in the Compleat angler that was used in the past or some sort of braking devize for the reel

can anybody with knowledge of historic names in fishing throw some light?

thanks from a beginner

Re: heavy-braked reel

Does it have something to do with the reel clutch?

Re: heavy-braked reel

i have a feeling it is to do with the multiplier reel as i have heard the expression whilst fishing and i think it is to do with magnetic pads which stops over run on a multiplier to stop birds nests. hope this helps
