Total Newbie!!!!
Hello Everyone,
A little about myself first. My name is Rob and I live in a sleepy little village near Haworth in West Yorkshire. I am a horse rider by hobby generally, I compete at Grade A level showjumping, but do remember a few fishing trips with grandad in the younger years of my life. I'd ideally like to get back into it more now. I think my first experience was the Kid's pond at Kilnsey trout farm lol. Basically what i need to know is the basic tackle e.t.c I will need for general coarse fishing, i.e the lakes and rivers around the village e.t.c I have got my rod license, bought the full £70.00 one incase I fancied going bigger and better lol. I am a five minute walk from a lovely lake in St Ives estate near Bingley where a lot of fishermen go. I'm not sure on the fishing rights on it but I think it is a private lake. There are a number of rivers and the canal close by and I would like to try fish them. All help will be GREATLY appreciated as I'm new to this. I can get worms from the muckheap though, we have a lot of fishermen come to the stables and dig through our muck to find worms. The little red ones, Im guessing they go down well cos they keep coming back. Cheers Rob Last edited by Chance : 07-15-2009 at 09:48 AM. |

Wow you will only need the standard licence this year and maybe for the next few whilst you get the hang of fishing
there are 3 ways to get started 1/ Match rod and reel --13 foot Ledger rod and reel -- 9 foot floats weights and line and hooks 2/ Medium put over pole (under 11 metres) pole rigs and spare weights and hooks 3/ A carp setup of 2 rods (you'd need another licence for 3 rods) obviously you will need tackle boxes and something to sit on the best thing to do is wander round and watch what folk are using chat to some of them and get an idea of what is being caught and then buy basic kit try to ignore brand names you pay a premium for them which until yo uget into fishing you don't need When you've found out what you need or think you need come back and we can chat some more

Thanks for that.
I have been looking at some starter kits but they dont really say whether they include rods or not and Im reluctant to buy one if I dont get a rod lol. They are about £100 and they have keep nets boxes reels e.t.c Does that sound reasonable? |

Back to tackle Ignore Argos et al they ONLY sell basic cheapo stuff over priced find a tackle shop and wander round a few times ask for what would be a decent starter rod reel combo but like I said check out what others are using too look to spend less than £50 on each rod -reel combo to start you can spend more when you know what you need My Favourite rod is a 15/17 foot and only cost £49.99 the reel was £10 so the deals are out there

Hi ROB.....sorry late with this but those red worms in your muck heap are the best worms you can get for fishing so if you can get your hands on a lot of those then use them......good luck
Ho and by the way you dont need the full game licence (i think that is what you have) just as Gray (MC) says a standard licence will do and costs no more than £26 for two rods ![]()
