Where are the fish ?

When you go fishing, say on a big lake, where would you start - seems a bit daunting when theres so much open water to have a go at.

Also normal ones ( with no islands ) when can you tell when to fish in the margins or out in the middle or just in front of you?

And (last of my questions) i know you use a plummet for finding depth, but when youre far out what would you do then ? a marker float ?

There you've almost answered your own question

When you find a spot that makes you think it may have fish over it (a shallow bar or ledge)
and you haven't got a visual marker to aim at then yes a marker float is where you aim your spods and bait at to hit the same place every time
