Step by step,

1. Place spool in bucket of water. (In order to reduce friction when reeled on line. When you reel in the line keep the spool in the bucket.)
2. If you have a 2 or 3piece rod use the bottom end with the handle.
3. Thread a heavy lead on the line, 4oz or so. (This will ensure the line gets reeled on tight.)
4. Thread line through eye. (Do it the other way that you would normally, do when you go fishing so thread from the top down.)
5. then tie the line onto the spool of the reel.
6. Attach reel to rod.
7. Wear a glove and put your hand about 3inches below the bottom eye, (I'm left handed so, have right hand supporting rod and grip the line however, not too tight or loose and left hand reeling the line in.
8. Watch the reel wind in the line, dont do this too fast or erratically, as this will result in an uneven distrubution of line on the spool.
9. Done!!!

As to what knot, i dont think it really matters, since you'll never get down that far on the line, however, i like a tucked blood knot
