Gill Rod - make or rod type?

Hi, I have been given a pair of fishing rods. One is 8 ft the other is 8ft 6". They are marked "Gill Rod 8'" and "Gill Rod 8' 6"" at the base. Can anyone tell me if this is a make or rod type ... I have tried searching net but to no avail ..... I would love to learn more about them and their proper use.
