what to use for catfish

How big are you looking at catching

at least a heavy Carp/Pike Set-up or in BIG rivers then a beach caster
or if you're made of money a specialist cattie rod (I'm always skint so it's a beach caster)
big strong hooks size 2 or 4 minimum 3/0 in Spanish rivers is small
big baits some French anglers use 3-4lb carp as deadbaits
I've seen whole tins of meatloaf used that's been fried to make it difficult for nuisance fish to break up

No and yes

There is usually a Hunting shop somewhere in town and they sell tackle and bait, although some are very expensive, you will always find them in seaside towns though most sell "Appats Normandie" in all sizes of rag and lug and very good quality bait it is but of course it's sea baits only

Most Supermarché and Hypermarché sell fishing tackle but beware some of it is CR** but you can find some real bargains like bite alarms prices in € the same price that we'd pay in £

Oh Yes and Maggots (Asticots) come in little tubs the same size we get red worms in and they are EXPENSIVE for the 2-3 dozen you get expect to pay almost 2€50

Best to take your own supplies if you can especially boilies and other baits as you will find this

OK Story time -- True story

We were in the South of France at a place called Portiragne Plagé the Canal du Midi comes to within half a mile from the beach here
An English guy was fishing for Bream and we stopped and had a chat he'd been there most of the day for one fish of around 7lb.
As we chatted a French guy arrived on his bike got off unshipped his telescopic pole put a single worm on his hook and sat down. 10 minutes later he has a big bream on the bank hits it over the head , puts his pole away and rides off home --with his dinner of fresh fish

That's the way the French fish -- for the pot and they take any size of fish they all go in even Pumpkinseed and minnow
