I was fishing a gravel pit for any method trout and it was a waste of time.
During the afternoon the bailif came by and said it had been fishing rubbish for weeks and asked me had I fished the pond over the back as there were good tench in it and if I wanted to I could go and fish it no problem. An hour later and I was sat on this pond and again watching a motionless float. It was scalding hot. A day for hammocks and cold stella more than angling. I was the only angler on the pond. As the heat of the day went and we started to go into evening I had a bite that I missed to be followed by another on the next cast that I connected with. 20 minutes later and the biggest tench I had ever seen in my life was in my landing net. As I was gazing at this huge fish the bailif walked up the track onto one of the other lakes and I called him over. To cut a long story short, I had no scales so he went to his hut and brought the match scales over to weigh it for me. 10lb 6oz. Wonderful fish. He said congratulations and away he went home. I was left alone and I fished on until dark. I had 5 more tench and the first one was the smallest. The lakes gone now. Taken over by another flaming syndicate . I dont suppose I will ever equal that again in my fishing life but so to will I never lose the memory. Apart from that spectre of a day my best tench has been around 5lbs from my local club water. See I still dont carry scales lol. |
