There are club matchs and open matchs. To enter a club match you will need to be in the club. Open matchs are open to everyone. Usually the club matchs will gain you points towards a club league. A club i was a member off did both club and open matchs. You needed to inform the match secretary in advance that you we're going to enter. If you want i'll take a look to see if clubs near you have a members section ?

Also my preference would be to get a match style rod. You can use them for light feeder work and float fishing, which will cover you quiet nicely on commercials. I would get a decent reel, preferably with 2 spools, and load them with 4lb line for float work and 6lb for feeder work. To recomend a few decent but reasonably priced brands, ron thompson and shakespeare do some great rods for the money. Reel wise, okuma are my favourites, half the price as shimano yet i think equal if not better in performance. The razor 30 match reels looks good by okuma, but shimano also do a small reel which would suit you for around £20ish.

If your mates go fishing you could always have matchs between yourselfs

Thumbs up tips

one of the first things i lernt when i started match fishing was feed sparingly
remember you cant take out what you have put in and always keep an eye out to see what everybody else is up to say you set up a pole & the tip you are struggling on the pole but you notice people catching on the tip change tactics
always feed a swim lightly wile fishing another because if one goes dead you
always have a back up
sometimes it pays to catch 3 or 4 fish of one line & try the other then go back

(some tips for when you do get on the match scene)
