Lateral Thinking + Worms

Throughout my fishing life i have used worms as the main bait ,but always struggled to keep them alive for long periods while on fishing sorties and they can be expensive in the 1/2 kilo up quantities. This year i decided to solve the problem and with a little help from the other half and a bit of Lateral thinking cracked it.
While having a cup of tea in the kitchen wife mentioned she was throwing out a 3 tier steamer(10pounds at asda) so being a bit tight decided to try and use it as a mini-wormery.
Tore up some cardboard (corrugated is best) and soaked enough to put a layer on the bottom of the three containers(squeeze it first-should be damp not wet)then bought 1/2 kilo of medium worms (about 600 or so). When they arrived i installed them in the steamer after splitting the medium between the three layers and putting them in the top.I have fed them on tea bags ,mashed potato and chicken meal, not too often about every three or four days and keep the medium not too dry.
Up to the present time i have had them ( whats left) about 12 weeks and still OK.
If they migrate down just move them to the top again .Change Medium about once a month using damp peat or filtered compost heap scrapings.
The worms Must not be exposed to sunlight or to much heat so take out what you require and keep them in the shed.
As you can see for extended forays it appears to be the perfect answer.
Regards
Coldte

i also have a 3 tier wormery but find it best to start the worms on the bottom
to migrate up i would feed them like you mentioned tea bags, veg, cardboard
every thing i have read says start on the bottom
where does the liquide go
can it be drained

you might need a tap

Hello again,
Seems there is a bit of confusion regarding fluid in my wormery. There is little if any fluid , Wormeries parse have fluid and only from decomposing material but i do not think from worms.
With mine the material added for food is consumed (passed through the worms ) and appears to be only solid with a little moisture but i have to keep the medium damp by misting every 2 or 3 days.
Hope this helps a bit , it is only my opinionand is accurate in my situation.

when i started my wormery it took about six months but you do get a lot of liquide eventualy the waist a worm makes is not always solid plus you have
rotton food damp paper e.c.t
the liquide makes great plant food but it has to be watered down so it is not to strong
cheers worms
