Line Strength and techniques

I am currently fishing a sizable pool, I have mostly been pulling out Roach and Perch, and watched some one pull out a huge Eel. I am wanting to trying to see if there is much else to catch. I use waggle floats and sweetcorn, bread, and worm as bait. I only have 4Lb line on at the moment, do I need to change it, and where shall i start with trying to catch other species?

4lb line is plenty for float fishing mate. too many people use heavy line and in turn reduce the fight to nothing and wheres the fun in that ! use maybe 6lb for feeder/ledger work with a lighter hooklink. what other species are known to be in the pool ?

there's 18lb line on my spool lol!! if i used lighter line would i not keep loosing my floats if i get caught in weeds or something? is that just the luck of the draw or is there a way to keep the float safe and just loose the hook if i get snagged??

18lb !!! when i fish for barbel in snaggy water my 10lb nash bullet xt line will pull through anything. if you use lighter line between your hook and your main line that will snap and you won't loose your float. i'd say roughly 1lb less. also 18lb line will stand out like a sore thumb to fish, i bet any money if you dropt the strength 1) you'd get more bites and 2) your cast alot further.

well you're the expert so i'll not argue with that I got it for pike fishin, and i only have the one spool for my reel so i just kept usin it. I'll def try lighter line though and see what happens.

im not an expert lol it just makes sence that thinner line will be less visible and more balanced tackle will give you better sport

i dont think many spools are interchangible, you'd be best either ordering another spool off the company or buying a second reel. most reels come with 2 or more spools these days. you can put any strength line on a spool, however the larger the strength the less line you will get on the spool. also the more restricted your casting will be. a good all round strength is 6lb though if you only have the one spool.

The pool is just on farmers land, its not stocked or commercially fished, some people fish with the farmers permission, but most just poach it. The only thing that I have been catching are plenty of Roach and sizeable Perch. The pool was known for carp, but a group of anglers have been seen taking them out for eating. The huge eel was instantly put on the barbecue. The pool is also known for very sizeable pike, I would be interested to see what else there is in the pool, but don't know where to start.
