can pole floats be used on rigs with rod and reel?

I've had an idea that when fishing canals or close in swims i could use a pole float and rig to fish directly laying on under the float for a small baited patch perhaps appealing for tench. would this work or give any advantages or not? is it a registered practice that i don't know about?

Basically IF you are fishing close in then there is no reason for not trying a ploe flaot BUT it may be easier to use them on a whip rather than a waggler rod
Althoug I have used them this way you can only get them out about a rod length unless they are heavy or you are using fine reel line

I would keep the hook length fine to get the greatest advantage from it
