Im unsure if the fly will suit a canal for carp and perch...

The water is usally merky, id stick to streams and clear waters for the better with flys.

Try feeding red maggots to attract smaller fish into your swim, keep doing this regularly throughout your session to really get them going. The idea is that the bigger predatory perch are attracted in to feed on the smaller fish.

Fish over the top of your loose feed with either a small 2 inch roach livebait (not everyone's cup of tea, but i'll leave you to make up your own mind on the morals of it), or a big juicy lobworm.

Sometimes it can pay off to fish a metre or so away from your main feed area as the bigger perch can tend to hang back waiting to attack the smaller fish. If you do decide to use a livebait and there are also pike in the water, ALWAYS use a wire trace.

I disagree with your comment a bout deadys bein better for perch than lifeys. they like to see something move as they are agressive and kill it in the process of attacking and eating it.

live bait a minnow i say or worm.

a worm will feel the same amount of pain as a fish, and it will have a further disadvantage by the fact that it is also drowning and losing more blood.

fishings cruel with any live bait

Luke, You could always use a "micro" or a small spinner?? just take some forceps just incase you get the rogue pike.
