what size elastic are you using?

as per making your own floats you may as well buy them from the shop as there cheep enough.

as shotting patterns go just keep it as simple as you can, if you floats 4x8 say use a bulk of 3 number 8 shot then 2 number 10's one as a drop shot a few inch from your hook and the 2nd number 10 shot in between the bulk and the drop shot.

Also depends on the depth your fishing do you know or will you know when you get there??

you could make a standard main rig with two small loops at each end one to connect to your pole too and the other end to tie a hook lenght too, altho if you put a hoop in your hook lengh you can remove it and change for a bigger and smaller one with ease.

as above for shoting up.

if you going to pre make you rigs get your top section out and put it out then loop the end of your main line and attach that to the pole then measure out the lenght of your top section but cut the main line a foot short for your hook lenght and loop that end then put your float on and a couple of shot but not all of them then attach your rip to the rig winder job done.

when you get to your location attach your rig to the top section make a long hook lenght without the hook on tie a plumb on the hook lenght and plumb your depth then tie hook acording to water depth.

hope that helps.

it depends some are shot some are styles, the best way to work them out is cut the top of a 2 litre pop bottle fill it with water, put the float on a short bit of line then add shot till you happy with it.

james why would you not shot your float and pre tie you hook when you set up your rigs? if you make up afew diffrent rigs and have diffrent top kits then you have a rig for every situation.

People do things different ways, i do have pre tied rigs but i also like to have the option of changing my hook lenghts on one rig so this is why i choise this method.

i dont think there is a right and wrong way but if you match fishing your method would be proferred im sure.

cheer.
