Tench Fishing
Hi,
A couple of the fisheries for my club that I have just joined have opened and have tench in them. Would really like to catch one but am a little in experienced. Has anyone got any advice about baits and tactics to use? |

Most sweet baits can work but Tench seem to love Sweetcorn and worm they also seem to like carp or Halibut micro pellets as ground feed around here As for tactics The older way is a simple running ledger or light weight float (even older is the lift float method pic here ) A Margin pole can be deadly when they really have their heads down - my son took 60lb in 3 hours at a local lake to us the mani nthing is that you have to have your hook on the bottom layed on maybe an inch then as long as they find your feed they'll hover up the rest too -- the only real problem may be the Carp love the same baits so you'll liable to get one or two of those too

I always find when i'm after tench that a maggot feeder does the damage. 2 red maggots on a hook and a feeder full of maggots gets them feeding really well.

does anyone bother to rake the bottom these days? i read two schools of thought on it, one that most people believe the raking 'stirs' up the bottom which attracts the tench.
To me this doesn't make too much sense and I prefer the other thought, that the raking simply clears the bottom so that your bait is more visible. I'm off next week for some really REALLY early morning tench missions, any more bait suggestions? at the moment it's looking like maggot and perhaps sweetcorn for visibility. a feeder rig sounds like the best idea. |

Fozzie,
Raking on certain waters can work wonders. On lakes with deep silt bottoms, raking stirs up the red worms that live in the deep silt, which are the natural food for tench in these waters.

I fish @ kingfisher pool in warwick which they stock with perch, tench, bream, roach and rudd.
I find that pole is most effective with 6lb line, size 16 hooks and an insert waggler with a cocktail of red and white maggots as bait. I have caught many tench and bream on this rig. |
