Smile Larger Fish Surprise for a beginner!

Hello all,
what a day i've had,not letting the cold spoil my fishing i set up and tried out the new line/hooklength suggestions you all gave me, down to 3LB main and 2LB hooklength.
i settled in once getting my float sorted to catching the usual tiddler Roach and the odd Perch.
my cast and strike has come on leaps and bounds since your advice, getting the line under and tight was the answer.
Then all of a sudden as i went back to red maggot from sweetcorn my rod bent like mad and what ever i hit was heading for the shelter of the tree's so i managed to get it away and enjoyed playing.i didn't have a clue what it was til i got it in my net a LB n Half Roach. defo showed me that there are bigger fish in there.
mind you i was surprised that i cought it with the small size hook 20 barbless and even more surprised with it being barbless that it didn't get away.
my friend came over and had a go on my rod and YES! you guessed it he cought more fish in 5 minutes than i did all morning... and the majority were perch.
so in all i cought 7 Roach including the larger one and 5 perch.
so the next time i go there i will experiment with a larger rod and reel with a different float set up.
take care,
a very content newbie
Brian

When you say larger rod #What are you using

I'd be on a 13 foot waggler rod for that type of fishing or my 15/7 foot waggler depending on the bankside vegetation don't want to tree it

Hello Elliot,
take it from me my friend do not be embarrassed about peer pressure and what they might say, i am 41 and just started the other week, i was not worried incase my friends laughed, how did they learn? its not an instant art that you can aquire,if any friend is a friend they should be enjoying nurtureing you and coaching you.If they dont then you tell them what to do.
Best thing to do is go to your best pal who fishes and ask him for help, they should be proud to help and that you asked them.
REMEMBER! there is no such thing as a silly question,so ask away.
I had 2 of my pals show me things at the weekend with my floats, shot etc.
now i just relish the advice.
let us know how you get on.
but above all ENJOY YOURSELF and dont get upset.
respect
Brian

Smile

Hello all,
thanks for your kind words.
i hit lucky last night,my friend dropped off a 12'' float rod and reel, a keep net and a landing net.So this afternoon i was raring to go (sod work!)
it was weird with the couple of extra feet on the rod, but i found my casting and striking dramatically improving.my biggest problem was getting the fish in and getting the landing net to it without the fish getting free.. this happened a few times but by the end of the day i got better.
i tried a different Float but kept the button type shot.
there were a lot of bites with sweetcorn, then i tried Lobworm....WOW! what a difference, bite after bite and just one worm i landed 3 Roack and 2 perch.
i did get myself frustrated with the terrain around me, a lot of trees and brambles but i only snagged once this time lol.
as i have read from the guys i noticed a big change as it started to get dusk,a lot more perch.
mind you a draw back of the day was a fella tipped up to see my friend and i just knew he was an instant expert,he wasn't giving friendly advice he was ridiculing my friend, "When i match fish i do this"..."when i won such and such competition i used this"...."ha ha i don't believe you have got that on your line."
A total prick, needless to say he didn't come my way, but my friend relaxed as soon as he left, i cant repeat what my friend said.
i bought a seat tray and i have the foot rest coming hopefully b4 the weekend.so not a bad week in total.
the bottom line i really have had a buzz, and i don't know the last time i relaxed so much.
A fella at work give me a braided carp rig and said to feeda lob worm the full length of the loop with a stop then maggot on the hook, ya know what i forgot all about it lol.
my friend didn't pop down with the whip like he said so i was a little dissapointed, but as i said to the lads, i will practice with the rod and the tiddlers before i move onto anything else.
well guys time peruse the net to see what my next purchase is going to be.
thanks for taking the time to read this.
any advice will be really appreciated.
Brian
