hello all,
am i going in the right direction please? i am using Ultima Power Plus 4lb 0.18mm main line, am i right in saying to get around 3lb hooklength in smaller diameter? please can anyone help and point me in the right direction if possible any links. oh! forgot to mention i am using the ready made hook lengths with the starter kit i got, i have no idea about it, the hooks are i think size 18 barbed, but i was looking at using size 18-20 barbless spades, any good? many thanks, Brian |

It's all a matter of balance
and what you feel comfortable with I personally would go with 2lb for the 18's and 1,1lb for the 20-22's but again it's what you feel comfortable with, IF you smash off too many at lower weights go up a bit until you get more confidence on the strike and to help think of a strike as trying to move the rod tip 3 inch quickly (a pole tip 1/2 an inch) as long as you keep the mainline tight then that should be enough the hardest part is ensuring you are in contact with the fish before you strike because a bow in the line will mean you have to strike further so risking bumping the fish off especially with barbless hooks you just have to keep at it I still loose fish even now because of that ********** slack bit of line I've not noticed forming in windy conditions

lowrider i feel madcaravaner is right in what he says ....i would come down on lb of line say maybe 3lb main line & 2lb hook link......
striking is very important i see too many anglers striking like they are trying to hook a shark & the poor little roach goes into the air like superman lol funny now but not good for the fish who has just died from a flying accident or a nice 2lb carp who has just lost his top lip my 10 year old son i have been teaching for about a year has only one problem now & thats tieing a hook on but its great to c him have a great days fishing all the best slimeofsnail ![]() |

Brian You're going too complicated Don't worry about diameter as every manufacturer is different the one thing that is standardised is weight go with just that to start with diameter comes with your favourite brand as ou find out what that is

Grey,
ya a saviour, makes sense now a was pulling my hair out. my friend bought me my first line 4LB .18mm but it seemed too thick, it didn't sink too well even when i dipped the rod as my friend showed me and the line was tight. i've got some sweet corn and a pint of red, so i am hoping to get out for a few hours tomorrow, regardless of the cold.i am going to try my own ground bait in a bit,so fingers frossed for me. thanks again friend, Brian what is your favourite male of line and hook length? to give me a pointer, i know everyone is different, its small perch, roach, and one or two Bream in the lake, there are ar one or two small carp but doubt al catch them yet. take care. |

Actually I tend to buy what I want and tend not to look at brands but what type of line I need
although I seem to have quite a lot of high strength Brown Maxima for Carping

hello Grey,
i borrowed my friends reel before i got line for mine and he had on the brown Maxima, but i learnt what you guys have mentioned a few times on changeing the line as he couldn't remember how old the line was, it got tangled more times than i remember which frustrated me, i kept thinkin i was doing everthing wrong. i have the small Odessey rx30 reel which will do for me for now, i wil look for a larger one in due course. thanks again. brian |
