Smile 1st Day fishing and learnt a lot

Hello all,
been a week or two since my 1st thread.i did go crazy on Ebay and had to stop myself as i was bidding on different starter packs and b4 i knew it i realised i had about 4 of everything all the £5-6 kits all add up.
so i stuck to a starter float rod n reel and off i went to a near by lake set my gear up. setting up the float correctly was a little confusing to start with, but after using ground bait i instantly reeled in my 1st roach, then a perch.
All these were small and my confidence grew when i changed from maggot to sweet corn and a Bream that was a decent size made me work for it.
i did have barbed size 20 on and then changed to barbless a whole new game as i did lose one or two.
a thouroughly enjoyable time and landed over 2.5 KG's in a couple of hours.
but wasn't happy when my battery went flat just as i was trying to take a pic of the days catch
many thanks for all the advice on all the threads, and making me look forward to tomorrow's fishing, definately hooked!
there were people using their poles and it proved a beginner could have a decent catch with far less experience as the other people, they were smiling when i cought my 1st one.
take care,
Brian

Smile you are so right!

hello Grey,
thanks for the reply.
it was great getting the confidence, mind you my casting wasn't too hot at the beginning, one or two small tree's that appear to jump out at you.
that bream was a little fighter give me a minute taster what bigger fish will be like.
i enjoyed setting the float up and getting my hook length sorted.
i only have a 4lb line on, i couldn't get the rule of thumb for what size main line to hook length size, and also i have bought quite a few floats i haven't a clue what half of them are exactly for, but doing a search on the net will get it.
i was impressed watchin my friend with his pole and the techniques etc. mind you he did manage to get his cought in a tree so i felt ok about my errors.
My friend showed me a photo of a carp he cought near by, 30LB, so i panicked a bit but one day, i want to learn slowly and enjoy myself before jumpin in on anything like that.
catchya soon.
regards,
brian

Smile hi there

hello Alex,
its a private lake, never had any fish introduced by humans.its largest fish is a few lb carp but the majority are small perch and loads of roach cought my first bream yesterday.
this gives me the confidence and able to to learn from my friends who are season fishers.
i learnt a lot today to manage my float and hooklength and where to place my shot etc.
the water is an man made pump inlet but there is a lot of work needed to clear undergrowth and then we can get a few more pegs layed.
many thanks for your reply.
regards
brian

Hi Brian and well done!!! Just a quick tip when using barbless hooks is to keep pressure on all the time. Don't give any slack line as the hook 9 times out of 10 will just come out. Don't rush them in to the net too quickly either as you don't want to have a fight on your hands under the rod tip and lose your biggest fish.

Keep it up mate, loving the enthusiasm!!! Stroll on summer!!!

Hi Brian

Well you won't know but Carp are NOT native to the UK
they were introduced by European Monks way back in the mists of time for food that's why so many monasteries have small stew ponds and the meaning of the word stew is just that fish stew
