Re: River fishing for carp.

I stop the current from moving my line by using a back lead, this keeps the line pinned down to the bottom so it has little resistance to the current.
In the winter, when the current is realy strong I use a grip lead to hold bottom, but still theres often nothing you can do about winter currents.

I use a similar set up to you, shimano hyperloop rods and baitrunners. I often need my friend to come down on his speedboat to help me bait up the swim however. You need distance on the casts to hit the gravel banks, so using a pva bag is out of the question. However a spod can usually do the trick though.

I normally find that fruity boilies work the best. However there is an alien species of crab in my stretch of the Thames so crab and muscle bolies also work well.

Re: River fishing for carp.

I've only caught a few on my stretch so far, the biggest was 21lb. The few local angers who fish there for carp tell me the average size is around 20lbs. The biggest Ive heard of being pulled out there was either 32lb or 36lb. The biggest Ive ever seen caught there is 29lb.

Boilies are the favorite bait for anglers here. Ive only used dough baits a few times, when I was in france, because there cheaper and easier to find out there. Bright green stuff it was!

Re: River fishing for carp.

Yeh its decent, but this seasons been a bit off key. People arent catching as they were in past seasons. So far Ive seen an 18 and a 12 out. I personally have had f all carp wise. Ill be doin some more nights soon however once the weather gets better and the fish start to feed.

What area of the thames do you fish?

Oh yer n what do you do about the crabs? I have to take in my bait every hour or so because it gets munched by the bastards!

Re: River fishing for carp.

Aaron,

I am a match fisherman from the UK, but on holidays in France I occasionally have a go for French River carp. I don't pretend to be a 'proper' carper, but I have been using a bait that seems to produce fantastic results every time - MARINE HALIBUT PELLETS. Last time I fished I had 5 carp for 48lbs in two hours (not bad for a non-carper!), they were between 4 and 14lbs and I lost another at the net (probably about 12/14 lbs).

The best thing about these pellets is that they have a very high oil content, which is great in rivers as the oil seeps out downstream. I feed smaller ones in a PVA bag and fish a larger (8 or 14mm)one on a hair rig (you'll need a small drill to get them onto a hair rig).

Casterway tackle in England may deliver them to North America: http://www.castaway-tackle.co.uk/Pro...tegoryID/96/v/

Hope this is of interest.

PS. By the way, the swim I catch these French carp in is on a fast (white water) river at the foot of a rapid 500 metres above sea level, so I imagine they might work in the Ohio river.

Re: River fishing for carp.

ive heard that the crabs in these rivers make a great bait. there was a gut who caught the thames biggest barbel on them. he mixed the meat from the crab 50/50 with a mixer and made boilies out of them! inginuiety at its best. might work for carp as well, you never know!

Re: River fishing for carp.

HI GUYS

I'M AN ANGLER FROM SOUTH AFRICA AND DURING SUMMER FISH REGULARLY ON THE VALL RIVER (ONE OF OUR MAIN RIVER PROVIDING WATER FOR US TO DRINK)

THE MOST COMMON METHOD OF FISHING HERE IS BY ATACHING THE BAIT DIRECTLY ON TO THE HOOK ITSELF
BOILIE FISHING IS VERY SMALL HERE ITS STARTING TO PICK UP VERY SLOWLY HERE, BUT STILL NOT BIG HERE, AND ANOTHER THING IS THAT ITS NOT ALL THAT EASY GETTING THE TACKLE FOR THAT TYPE OF FISHING AND MOST OF THE TACKLE IS IMPORTED HERE SO SOME THINGS ARE I BIT PRICY

GENERALY THE BAITS WE USE ARE DOUGH BAITS, PIPS (CORN), WORMS

FOR DOUGH BAITS I WOULD NORMALY TAKE BROWN/WHITE BREAD BREAK IT INTO PIECES POP IT INTO THE BLENDER TILL ITS FINE ADD EGG TO THE MIX THEN MIX IT INTO A DOUG , LATER ADDING A FLAVORING OF MY CHOICE, AND A CLOLOURING DYE

I WOULD NORMALY TAKE A BALL THE SIZE OF A PEA AND ATACH TO THE HOOK, THEN EITHER PLACE A WORM ON THE END, OR EVEN A CORN PIP,

HERE IN SOUTH AFRICA WE HAVE A LOT OF FLAVOURED DIPS (USUALY A BASE OF GLYCERIN/GLUCOSE WITH A FLAVLOURANT)
ALL I WOULD THEN DO IS DIP THIS BAIT OF MINE INTO THE DIP THEN CAST

IF NE BODY IS INTRESTED IN OUR METHODS OF FISHING PLS CNT ME delwynv@hotmail.com

AS I AM INTERESTED IN LEAARNING ABT BOILIE FISHING AND HAIR RIGS
