Depends on venue and size of carp really......carp of 20lb/25lb....10lb main to 8lb hook length......carp of 25/30lb....12lb main to 10lb hook length.....carp of 30lb plus....15lb main to 12lb hooklength.....the bigger the carp the higher the breaking strain should be with about 2 lb or so difference in break of hooklength but of course you have to use safety clips in your set up to make sure if you get snagged up the line will come free.
I have caught 20lb plus carp on 6lb break main line straight through but not all agree with the straight through method and i was not targeting the carp at the time.
Best way to feel safe is to know how big the carp go to first, ask one or two of the locals for info on that, then cater for the big ones if they go to 30lb then that is what you cater for, your main line should be no less than half the size of the carp weight in this case 15lb you could go higher but not lower if i was you and that's how i do things but everyone does things a little different

IF I'm intentionally Carp fishing I go loaded with
8lb
10lb
12lb
16lb
spools to the water and depending on what local info is depends on which I thread the rod with
as for hook length I usually go 2lb lighter for each main line

I have Carp pole rigs made up the same

I have caught on lots of rods and even taken a 12 on a 2lb hooklength which I can only record as being *************** scary

my 41lber was landed on 18lbBS line
