hair rigs

what is everyones opinions on hair rigs as i have never reall used them and was wondering if they are any better for fishing normal baits such as sweetcorn than just the usual hook, or if they only really come into their own when fishing with pellets or boilies.

i have reasently used popped up trout pellet on a hair rig of the fist time and i courght me the biggest carp in the lake of 25lb.
