Post A Full Guide To Catching Sea Trout...

Hi, Will - this might help a bit:

METHODS AND RIGS:
  • The best method for fishing off the shore and off a boat for sea trout, I find is ledgering - good and strong.
  • The best floats to use are the big, fat, chubby ones.
  • The best weights to use are between 5oz and 8oz.
  • Use medium sized swivels.
  • Use medium sized booms.
  • Have a medium sized disgorger ready.
  • Use medium sized hooks with 2 - 3 barbs.
  • The best line to use is probley a 20lb - 30lb main line, and a 10lb - 20lb trace.
  • Remember to take a tape measure and/or scales for if you bring in a big one! Or a small one for that matter of fact!
BAITS:
The best baits for sea trout are ragworm and lugworm whilst ledgering. They will also feed on crabs, other fish and sand-eel.

LURES:
The best lure for sea trout is a wobbler. You can also use spinners and plugs.

LOCATIONS:
For good locations for sea trout look out for:
  • Fast flowing water.
  • Rocks.
  • Deep harbours around piers and jetty's.
THE SEASONS (based on the UK's typical weather patterns - may vary):
The main season for sea trout is, well, any time of year really but they are most around, i find, in the middle of the year between July and September, like salmon.

SIZE LIMITS:
  • MAFF (Ministry of Forests and Fisheries) Shore And Boat Size Limit: 30cm/12in.
  • NFSA (National Federation of Sea Anglers) Shore Size Limit: 30cm/12in.
  • NFSA (National Federation of Sea Anglers) Boat Size Limit: 30cm/12in.
