Roach
Living for a maximum of 18 years, Roach rarely exceed 3lb in weight, although a few can attain 3.5lb and 40cm. A fish of 2lb is a true specimen. Any 3lb fish must be carefully examined as it may well be a Roach Bream hybrid.
Where to catch them
The Roach is a very widespread species and can be caught in any of the lakes, rivers and canals in the country. A few venues hold a good number of 8oz plus fish, St. Georges Park Lake has Roach to 2lb.
Methods/Baits
Roach can be caught on most methods and baits. Most popular throughout the year are maggot, caster and bread. During the hot summer months the HOT favourite is hemp. Roach love it! I have had many 20lb pus bags of Roach from the Bristol Avon and the River Kenn, feeding hemp and fishing tares or hemp on the hook. The longer you fish the bigger the fish get. As dusk arrives a tare on the hook will often tempt that specimen 2lb+ Roach, which is feather in any anglers cap.
